Please ask Oliver and Redford to accept this invitation and meet face-to-face with the communities that are being poisoned every day.
The tar sands are growing out of control – destroying the land, destabilizing our climate, and poisoning the water of the people living downstream and in the surrounding Athabasca Watershed.
Community leaders are taking matters into their own hands. On July 5th, First Nations and Métis leaders are hosting the Healing Walk, a gathering led by the Keepers of the Athabasca to focus attention on the need for healing in the region.1
The Keepers have invited Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver and Alberta Premier Alison Redford to join them in the Healing Walk and meet face-to-face with the communities that are being poisoned by the reckless expansion of the tar sands.
Now, imagine if thousands of us join with the Keepers of the Athabasca and call for our political leaders to face the facts and work with local communities to steward the land in a way that is safe and sustainable for all generations.
Please stand with these communities and send a message calling on Oliver and Redford to join the Healing Walk on July 5th. If enough of us send a message, we can help hold our governments accountable to the communities they’re poisoning.
“The tar sands have impacted First Nations so badly. I am 85 years old and us old people are having such a hard time today because this is not what we knew growing up. We used to drink the water straight from the streams and creeks, and now no one can do that. We don’t know what is in the water now. I eat very little of the food I grew up on, moose, caribou, fish… it is all sick. We don’t even eat the berries and medicines anymore because there is too much pollution in the air and the land. When I was growing up people just died of old age, now there are so many sicknesses that were never here before.”
Instead of facing the facts, our government is looking the other way. Ignoring all the evidence, Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver even claimed that water poisoned in tar sands tailing ponds will be made clean enough to drink!2
