SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. —Twenty-two-year- old Sama C. Quinland, of St.
Croix, Virgin Islands, will serve 30 years in prison for stabbing and
shooting a local college student to death.
Quinland was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to voluntary
manslaughter for the July 25, 2011. That night, deputies found
19-year-old DeAndre N. Fulton-Smith stabbed 22 times and shot twice in
Officials said Quinland met Fulton-Smith through an Internet website,
believing Fulton-Smith to be a woman. He shot and stabbed him,
officials said, after realizing he was transgender.
Quinland had previously been convicted of second-degree burglary in
2008. Officials said he will serve 80 percent of the prison sentence
before he is eligible for release.
