Katie Short and Kimberly Kidwell got married yesterday in the rainbow-painted house across the street from anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.

Equality House sent out messages earlier this month saying they were looking for same-sex couples who wanted to wed at the rainbow-painted house in Topeka, Kansas.

The lesbian couple replied, and was chosen to be the first wedding to take place at the home purchased by Planting Peace founder Aaron Jackson to ‘combat messages of hate,’ from religious extremists Westboro Baptist Church who are notorious for protesting war veteran’s funerals and organizations that support equality.

Short and Kidwell, who have been together for five years, announced their engagement on Facebook earlier this week.

The couple received messages of support and love via Facebook and Twitter.

Ali Bryant (@btwen2buildings), who was present at the wedding, said: ‘Beautiful wedding! So Happy for Kim and Katie!’

The Daily Show Couch (@TDSCouch) posted: Congratulations to the lovely couple, wishing them many years of happiness.’

Though Equality House was unavailable to comment, a representative from LGBT rights group Have A Gay Day posted on Facebook that there was no hateful reaction from the anti-gay church across the road.

‘We took a photo today with Planting Peace and the Equality House. Some people might hate for even taking a photo with the members of the Westboro Baptist Church. I like to think of what Ellen Degeneres might have said: “Haters are my motivators.” I don’t believe in what the WBC stands for but I stand for love. She didn’t curse us out or call us names and we didn’t call them names or say anything negative at all.

‘We are greater than their hate and that is what we will be remembered for. If I believe in loving my haters I will proudly stand next to them.’

Earlier this year, when Planting Peace, the non-profit headquartered in Equality House, announced plans to paint the house in rainbow colors, Westboro Baptist Church released a statement saying: ‘We thank God for the Sodomite Rainbow House.’

‘It is right across the street from the ONLY church that loves people enough to tell them the Bible truth about the filthy, soul-damning, nation-destroying sin of sodomy…The Sodomite Rainbow house helps shing a bright spotlight on this!’
