TORONTO – A year from tomorrow, Sept. 15, 2014, “the show” will be begin.

And no one, says a former lover, will be happier than Luka Rocco Magnotta.

“It’s exactly what he wants,” said a transsexual pal who goes by the stage
name Barbie Swallows.

The big stage, she said, is exactly what he craves.

Of course, it is supposed to be a first-degree murder trial in the
disturbing slaying of a 31-year-old Chinese student named Jun Lin in May
2012,

But the former “girlfriend” of Magnotta for four months in 2006 said for
the 31-year-old it will be the completion of his 24-hour a day desire to
become famous.

“He was obsessed with that,” Swallows said. “He was an extremely
narcissistic guy.”

Swallows, whose birth name I’ve agreed not to share at this time, grew up
in a traditional Toronto Greek-Macedonian family that is still supportive.

Technically and legally considered a man, Swallows prefers to go by the
name Barbie and be referred to as a “she.”

She makes a living in the Internet pornography business.

“My breast implants came after I knew him,” she said. “But I did have the
blonde hair.”

Some of her clientele are fascinated with her previous relationship with
Magnotta, whose birth name was Eric Clinton Newman.

In her months with him, she said it was clear his goal was to become a star.

“We met at Remingtons on Yonge St. and with a friend of mine, we went home
and had a threesome,” Swallows said.

The invitation to dinner came the next day.

“He was very respectful,” Swallows said. “He took me to Captain John’s and
picked me up in a limousine.”

They were inseparable for the next four months.

But it was a complicated relationship. All the focus was on Magnotta.

“His whole apartment had photos of himself from his living room to his
hallway and his bedroom,” she said. “He kept wanting me to take photos of
him in different outfits. He was a nice guy, don’t get me wrong, but he was
a really self-obsessed guy. He had a lot of problems and what I thought
were inner demons.”

Swallows said she also noticed he had great interest in the story
surrounding Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.

“He kept going on talking about them non-stop as if he looked up on them as
role models,” Swallows said. “He would watch videos on Paul and Karla on
YouTube. He was really fascinated by those two.”

She has told her story to a British tabloid for $3,500, participated in a
CBC Fifth Estate report and has agreed to be interviewed by an A&E
documentary maker. This is her first Canadian newspaper interview.

There is no animosity between the two, she said, and he did confide in her
about his difficult teenaged years.

He wanted to be somebody different and jealously guarded the Magnotta
persona.

“I remember leaving the front door at his apartment and there was mail on
the floor and it said Eric Clinton Newman,” Swallows said. “I went back
inside and said, ‘So, your real name is Eric?’ He wasn’t too happy. He
accused me of snooping around.

“Yeah, he was extremely paranoid and sometimes his personality would change
from hot to cold. I accidentally knocked down a picture of him in his
living room and he just yelled and snapped at me and said watch it.”

But he was also very kind to her most times.

Although he would hold her hand all the time, he seemed troubled by
intimacy, she said.

“I believe because of his job working as an escort, he didn’t feel
comfortable having sex with people he had feelings for, cause he would have
sex with strangers that he didn’t care about,” she said. “In other words he
felt sex was dirty.”

She said when she thinks back, after what is alleged to have happened in
Montreal, it brings chills.

“I thought he was messed up,” she said. “Thank God I left him,”

She has not be subpoenaed for his trial and isn’t expecting to be.
Magnotta’s legal team refused to comment on Swallows’ assertions.
