MTV: Rape Culture Doesn’t Deserve an Award

MTV has nominated Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” video for three Video Music Awards, even though the video and song promote the objectification of and violence against women.

Dear Axcella,

I made the mistake of watching Robin Thicke’s video for the song “Blurred Lines” after reading a blogger’s take on the outrageous depictions of women and the incredibly inappropriate lyrics about corrupting a “good girl.” See for yourself, and then speak out against this despicable video getting awards.

Dozens of blogs, magazines and organizations have spoken out against the sexism and promotion of rape culture that this video and this song convey. This new kind of admitted sexism that portrays the objectification of women as a sort of playful game is perhaps even more dangerous than more veiled forms of sexism. It must stop, and it CERTAINLY shouldn’t be getting awards.

If we have any chance at stopping the perpetuation of rape culture in our society, we have to speak up against blatant examples like this. Please sign this petition telling MTV to withdraw all nominations for Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” video from the Video Music Awards.
